Crafters all over Australia (and beyond I believe!) are auctioning their work to help raise funds for the Queensland Government’s Flood Relief Appeal – something I definitely want to be part of.
I’ve mentioned before that I’ve taken a sort-of-handmade pledge this year – that all the gifts I give in 2011 will be handmade, with a few carefully formulated exceptions. Well, my offering for the auction would suit anyone making a similar pledge. It’s the perfect starter pack for an ethical gift stash!
So, the pack includes a cloth doll, a robins nest ring, a little felted pregnant woman and a set of three story telling finger puppets. I will send it anywhere in the world, free of charge.
The cloth doll’s body is from a recycled felted blanket, her hair is from a recycled felted jumper and her clothes (apart from her shoes which are cut from new wool felt) are all made from recycled fabrics. She is about fourteen inches tall.

The robin’s nest ring can be made to your specifications. The band is soft wool rainbow felt with a tiny metallic blanket stitch all around the edge, the nest is quite loosely needle felted and the eggs are fimo. If the ring is for someone in particular you can tell me the ring size and I will create it accordingly, or if it’s just for your gift stash I can make it small, medium or large. It comes in a little gift box.
Here’s one on a spooky white hand.

Here’s one being modelled by a small fan of craftiness I met at Ceres markets.

And here’s another being modeled at Sprout market.

For the pregnant needle felted doll the winning bidder can choose from leafy green, pale blue or rusty red.

I think these would make a lovely gift for a friend celebrating pregnancy, a perfect addition to a nativity scene, and a nice feature for a nature table.

With a tea candle glowing beside her, a little needlefelted doll also keeps a lovely vigil for a friend soon to give birth.

The finger puppets are one of the little sets of three I have blogged about before. They are hand knitted from pure merino wool and the features are wool felt.
They are a sleeping child…

A moon…

And a cat…

So depending on the winning bidder’s specifications, the package will look something like this.

How this auction works:
1. Bidding will start at $20 (Australian).
2. You can place a bid by leaving a comment on this blog post with your bid amount and email address. Please make sure that your bid is higher than the previous bidder.
3. Your bid must be in whole dollar increments.
4. This auction is open to everyone and postage anywhere in the world is free.
5. The auction begins NOW and will END at midnight on Monday 24th January 2011.
6. At the close of the auction, I will contact the winner (please make sure your bid comment includes your email address). The winner will pay the winning amount directly into the Premier’s Flood Relief Appeal and send me proof of payment via email. Once proof of payment has been received, I will post the package to you.
7. Thankyou for participating and happy bidding!

Anna, I think this is a wonderful thing you are doing. We have been watching the news coverage of the floods with horror. I’m just sorry I cannot afford to bid…
Fabien showed me a video on youtube where many cars were being washed away by flash floods…it’s frightening – so much is changing in the world. What wonderful gifts you have to offer in order to support the flood relief. My bid is $40.

Michelle, I love your work too, and I agree that there’s something very special about taking unloved scraps and turning them into a lovable new being!
