A couple of weeks ago I received a winter gnome in the mail from my lovely and inspiring friend Shannon from Rhythm and Rhyme, as a trade for some books. I saw him on her website and I loved him right away.

He reminded me of the old man in my favourite of my aunt’s picture books, Birdo. The old man doesn’t have a hat but still, the spirit is just right, don’t you think?

The thing is, my gnome has arrived right on the tail end of winter. Here in Melbourne the mornings are still cold enough for a slight frost and the evenings are still pretty chilly. But in my garden, spring is just about here.

Jasmine is my favourite springtime garden smell…

Mint is my second favourite…

And my grape hyacinths don’t smell of anything, but they are so pretty.

While all of this is going on in the garden, my winter gnome sits beside Birdo and will stay at least until the very last of the frosts have gone. This is how he looks up at me as I’m packing away the last of my wintery things.

Could you pack him away?
never ever!
Uh, no. It would hurt his wee gnomish feelings. He’ll be there to be a breath of sweet winter air when all around is warm and stuffy.
Definately an all round weather Gnome!
He’s lovely Anna… I think he’ll be very happy breathing the spring jasmine and mint
He matches the flowers beautifully! Perhaps he’d enjoy spending some time in the spring … maybe even winter gnomes get tired of snow sometimes?
Gorgeous flowers btw, particularly the grape hyacinths – I’m not a fan of regular hyacinths (can’t stand the smell) but that grape hyacinth is all … delicate yet vibrant. Love it.
And ahhh, much envy for your springtime, autumn is being ushered in this part of the world after a summer that never got very summery!
he does have such a sweet little face…tis funny no matter how many doll’s faces I create they are alway so different…This gnome has a twinkle in his eyes, he know’s he has got your round the little toe and will be breathing the sweet scent of Jasmine and chatting to Birdo all through spring
(of course now I have to go find a copy of that book too!)
I would never pack him away (esp. if our mutual friend Shannon created him!) Have never before seen the book Birdo, but will have to track down a copy & have a look… delightful…
