Autumn and Squirrel Nutkin

In Surprised by Joy C.S. Lewis describes one of the glimpses of ‘joy’ that he later understood as profoundly connected with the development of his religious faith. While reading Beatrix Potter’s book Squirrel Nutkin he felt a kind of longing for autumn that I can so easily understand.

He wrote:

‘It sounds fantastic to say that one can be enamored of a season, but that is something like what happened; and, as before, the experience was one of intense desire. And one went back to the book, not to gratify the desire (that was impossible–how can one possess autumn?) but to reawaken it.’
