Proverbs 31:10-31

I have a (not uncomplicated) soft spot for the woman in proverbs 31.

I wish the first verse wasn’t concerned in any way with ‘pricing’ her and I wish the second verse didn’t leave her husband’s virtue resting so firmly on her shoulders.

But there is so much I love about her life.

I love all the different kinds of work she is doing and the fact that she is doing it with her hands. I like that she buys a vineyard with her profits and works it successfully. I admire her concern for the women who work for her and her pro-active approach to the problem of poverty. I like that she rises before the sun, unafraid of the cold and pleased with what she has prepared to sell that day. I love all the colours and textures in her life– the purple silk, the tapestries, the linen, the scarlet clothing and the candle flickering in the dark night.

And of course, I love that she is valued for strength, wisdom and compassion above all else.
