Something it has taken me 34 years to learn
One thing I have not learned in my 34 years is that when you are utterly sleep deprived you should leave important things, such as ATMs, well alone. But one thing I have learned is that you should always ask for what you want, since if you don’t, nobody knows.
So.
Last night I was walking around like a zombie after a stressful day at work and a previous night of no sleep due to noisy neighbours and mad cat. On my way home I withdrew $100 from the ATM and…left it there. They make you take your card first because people of small intelligence might otherwise forget it, but the cash comes last because not even a complete idiot forgets that. Present company excepted, obviously. I didn’t even realise until I got home.
Without much hope I rang the bank today to see if they could help and guess what, they refunded me the money! The guy checked the balance on the machine, found it to be $100 over and put it back into my account!
Sorry to all those heroic underdogs struggling with rent and unable to buy birthday gifts for your thin but large-eyed and hopeful children (I had been comforting myself by imagining that my loss was your gain.)
But the moral of the story is…sometimes people will help you, even if you’ve been really, really stupid.
